Kerryn Davis, Artist
“If you won the lottery, what would you do?” My answer has never changed. In FIVE DECADES, my answer has never changed! It has always been that I would be an artist, and get lost in the creative. I finally asked myself “Why am I not doing this right NOW?" And have given myself permission to follow my passion.
I grew up an artist. No specific medium. But always creating. Always. From writing to photography to painting to carving to building! Anything and everything I could do. And at an early age I combined my talents with entrepreneurship. In grade school, I sold personalized cartoon drawings. In junior and senior high, I made extra money with silkscreened cards and t-shirts. Though my love for creating continued to grow as an adult, life got in the way. My parents insisted on “a real degree”. Responsibilities and the fear of not being good enough crept in: "This isn’t perfect… It would be better if… It’s not as good as…” Not any more. I have put the mind-monsters out to pasture and am embracing the reality that nothing is perfect! It is differences and flaws that make things unique, interesting, beautiful, one of a kind! The Navajo, the Japanese, and many other cultures have embraced this fact for centuries, even incorporating flaws into their work to remind themselves and others that “the only thing perfect is God”. My paintings may not be the perfect heart shape. A tiny fly may have found its eternal resting place... A bare spot gives it character... Each is truly a one of a kind. Each is made with love. This is love, imperfect.
Born and raised in Narragansett, RI, Kerryn is a former teacher, advertising executive, and entrepreneur. She built and ran her own successful brick and mortar retail business for a decade, and is also extremely handy, having worked for one of the first female master carpenters in the country for a number of years. A DIY'er and Artist, she is constantly building, repairing, or creating something. Kerryn loves laughing, power tools, swinging a hammer, meeting new people, cooking, and trying different beers, bourbons, and wines.
A tree may have a thousand leaves, but you will find each one has its own shape, markings, and beautiful imperfections. Each of my heart paintings is a leaf from my being. No two are alike. There are splashes and splatters, lines and flings. I may use just one color, or an entire scene as a backdrop. All are acrylic paintings, though some are on cotton canvas, while others are on cement board with epoxy resin, and a hand-made reverse floater frame to present the piece from the wall.
When you look at my paintings, I want you to feel the love, warmth, and strength that I feel when I discover a heart found in nature. Who or what does the heart make you think of? A friend, spouse, pet? A place or time in your life? Or perhaps something you have accomplished or overcome? After my Mom passed, I started to see hearts just about everywhere. And when I do, I feel Her presence and simply whisper “Thanks, Mom”. It gives me a safe, warm feeling. This inspired the subject matter of my paintings.
I am not perfect. My art is not perfect. Art is how I express and share myself. It heals and expands me. It is love. And through my artwork, you get a piece of me: Love, Imperfect.
